Just north of the Port of Veracruz is where Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, landed, hoping to claim the legendary land full of gold and silver. Further west, desert stretches to the state of Puebla and is the ancient route to Mexico City, home of the Aztec. Inland, the hills have woodlands and tropical forests. The plains along the coast create vast thermals which transport migrating raptors on their southern journey. It has a wealth of habitats, human history and culture, and importantly for us, the largest migration of hawks in the Western Hemisphere, if not the world. It is both a city and state of Mexico, bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the east and on the West by the Sierra Madre Mountains. Veracruz is little visited by Americans yet is a mecca for Mexicans looking for their roots. We'll focus the tour on botany, but will also look for birds, reptiles, amphibians, and butterflies. This large preserve is in the heart of the NJ Pine Barrens, and contains over 16 square miles of pitch pine forest, blueberry fields, Atlantic white-cedar swamp, shallow lakes, and plenty of flora and fauna. This site is one of the most beautiful wetlands in the Pine Barrens, where over 50 rare and endangered species live. For those of you that are going to sleep at home and come back Saturday, there is no difference in price, but it is an option. Shared bathrooms with showers are available. Sleeping arrangements will be on cots in open-style bunk-rooms. Eat dinner prior to arrival on Friday, or bring a bag dinner. This experience includes an overnight stay in the Ashland Lodge, alcoholic beverages, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday. Finish with a dinner of Coverdale Farm Preserve products made by the Centreville Café. The program will end at the nearby Coverdale Farm Preserve where you will take a tour to learn about the process of growing organic vegetables, see the vegetable production facilities, and how we run our regenerative agriculture program to benefit people and nature at the same time.

After a catered lunch, take part in an outdoor art experience, as well as a session to learn about the benefits of essential oils. Both activities are designed to put you in touch with nature in a mindful, relaxing, and rejuvenating way that you will love. After breakfast, relax with both Forest Bathing and Ornitherapy. On Saturday, wake up with an early gentle-yoga session that is suitable for all. Stay the night at the Ashland Nature Center lodge (or sleep at home if you wish). On Friday evening, enjoy a campfire circle and some astronomy with an expert. Forget about your day-to-day life and immerse yourself in the natural world, healthy food, nature observation, art, and more to give your mind and body a needed break.
